Snapdragon 888+ Will Be Manufactured On 4nm Process

While one can count the number of 2021 flagships rocking a Snapdragon 888 processor due to the global chip shortage, Qualcomm is working on the Snapdragon 888+, and new leaks show that it will be a big upgrade.

Evan Blass revealed more details about the upcoming Qualcomm flagship processor in a tweet.

“SM8450 is Qualcomm’s next-gen premium system-on-chip (SoC). It has an integrated Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF system. It is fabricated on a 4nm process.”

Snapdragon 888+ Features

  • Kryo 780 CPU built on Arm Cortex v9 technology
  • Adreno 730 GPU
  • Spectra 680 ISP
  • Up to 1GHz mmWave downlink and 400MHz Sub-6 D
  • Support for Qualcomm Aqstic WCD9380/WCD9385 audio codec
  • Qualcomm secure processing unit (SPU260)
  • Support for Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 subsystem
  • Support for quad-channel package-on-package LPDDR5 RAM
  • Adreno 665 video processing unit (VPU)
  • Adreno 1195 display processing unit (DPU)

One of the key features of the Snapdragon 888+ is that it will be manufactured using a 4nm process and will utilize Kryo 780 cores that are based on ARM’s new v9 architecture. The new v9 architecture is said to give emphasis on security, vector processing, and machine learning. One of its new features is Confidential Compute Architecture (CCA), which is a hardware-based secure environment that protects crucial code and data from suspicious sources.

The GPU is said to be an Adreno 730, while the ISP is a Spectra 680. Both are unannounced, and we do not know how they will be an improvement over the GPU and ISP of the current Snapdragon 888. Interestingly, the Snapdragon 888+ will debut two new chips: an Adreno 665 video processing unit and an Adreno 1195 display processing unit. Again, we still do not have a clue as what to these chips will do–considering that you already have an Adreno GPU already.

For connectivity, the Snapdragon 888+ will use Qualcomm’s Fastconnect 6900 and an X65 5G modem. The former will give support to WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, while the latter will offer support for up to 1Ghz mmWave downlink and up to 400Mhz Sub-6Ghz downlink. Speaking of the X65 modem, Qualcomm promises up to 10gbps download speeds–though it will take a while before we get to realize such speeds.

There’s also a mention of support for quad-channel LPDDR5 RAM and an unknown Qualcomm secure processing unit. With all this info, the Snapdragon 888+ is expected to be more than just an incremental upgrade to the Snapdragon 888.
