The ASUS VivoBook S14 is a fantastic mid-range premium laptop. It is thin and light in weight. The 14-inch display has an ultra-thin bezel which makes the laptop appears like any other 13.3-inch models. In this Asus VivoBook S406U Review, we have tested the i5-8250U device model. Let’s find in this ASUS VivoBook S406U Review.
It is a MacBook competitor regarding price and updated hardware. The hardware is just great on this machine for the price. Most of the Windows machines lack portability, and we need some lightweight laptops just like the MacBook Air or Book shaped laptops. The Asus VivoBook S14 has that tendency to keep up this kind of expectations. In this, Asus S406U Review we have talked about how good this machine and what you can expect from it.
Design and Display:
This machine has been designed minimal, and it is solid too. Its lid looks excellent because of brushed aluminum finish. It is one of the premium texture you may have seen in ZenBoook series. The VivoBook S14 looks more professional, premium and solid. You will surely get some cool looks when you carry this with you.
The VivoBook S14 has a beautiful display, and the latest specs hardware too. If you compare this with MacBook, they both lack there in MacBook Air. If you are curious about colors, this Asus S14 is offered in two colors; grey and gold. The laptop is a good combination of plastic and metal finishes. Remember it is not a complete metal machine.
Asus was able to fit the 14-inch screen in the 13-inch panel which means fewer bezels and more beautiful display. There is only 78.5% screen-to-body ration present on this laptop. It’s more compact and powerful. However, there is no protection on the screen which is okay for this price.
Asus VivoBook S14 S406U makes use of high-quality plastic in its construction. The laptop feels solid and light. You may see a little tuff side with hinge mechanism but that is nothing, it’s just a dig deep talk. You won’t even feel that there are some more changes required.
S406U comes with slightly better ports options. You will get one USB 2.0, one USB 3.0 and a single Type-C port USB 3.1 (Gen 1) standard. There is a Micro-HDMI video output, micro-SD card slot, along with a 3.5mm jack as well. There is also the other variant which has an SD card slot and full HDMI port on it.
ASUS VivoBook S406U Review Addon:
If you want to add extra stuff or want to increase the capacity then you need to open it completely. Also, the speakers quality is decent but it is not as loud as the MacBook Air has in it.
The VivoBook S14 is a budget ultrabook with a good hardware combination. It is powered by an Intel’s i5-8th generation processor, Integrated 620 Graphics, 8GB of RAM and 128/256GB of SSD which is fast enough. If you want to buy the base variant that has lower CPU i3-7th generation it will cost you around 45,000 INR else this high end will cost you more from stores.
It is fast and worthy. It was able to render a 4 minutes video in around 10minutes in Premiere Pro. I’m not sure about the time but this is it. It can actually edit the videos without getting lags.
Keyboard and Trackpad:
The keyboard is also good on this laptop. The keys offer a travel of 1.4mm and it also has the backlighting which is just a great addon to this laptop. We don’t think that the keyboard needs more for this price the keyboard is just perfect.
The trackpad on the S406U comes with Windows precision drivers with the built-in palm rejection technology. But it is not that smoother as we expected. The sensor is accurate and great but for a while, it lagged at few places yet it is so far the best trackpad we have seen on this budget machine. There is a fingerprint too which is accurate and fast.
The ASUS VivoBook S406U has a good battery life too but it lost against MacBook Air. It is able to give around 6hours of usage with decent usage such as media consumption, surfing the internet, watching movies on it. If you are doing some video editing or watching movies on high brightness with 100-level audio you might see that it gets the complete drain in 3-4 hours.
Asus VivoBook S406U Review Conclusion:
It is a great laptop for the price you pay. You should buy it if you are looking for Windows laptops that can compete with MacBook Air. It feels premium, looks great and has its own shine line. The price is not that aggressive, it is light and works like butter.
